OCA Alliance sees new products and wide-spread adoption of AES70 at ISE 2025

The OCA Alliance has attested to a rousing ISE 2025, full of new implementations and products and a broader industry embrace of open public control standards. A long-time exhibitor at ISE, this year’s record-setting attendance brought with it massive enthusiasm for media networking and technologies that can extend the value of existing technologies—and it is here that the AES70 standard was prepared to answer the call.

“This was a fantastic year for AES70 at ISE,” reports OCA Alliance Marketing Chair, Ethan Wetzell. “We saw several new products and implementations of the standard—some of which we knew were coming, but several of which were surprises. And that’s really the benchmark of success for a technology like this—when the industry begins to pick it up and implement it independently, that’s a ringing endorsement.” .

Throughout the show, members of the OCA Alliance were on hand to showcase and demonstrate options for commercial hardware, software controllers, hardware and software reference designs, and discuss the standard’s latest additions. Of particular interest this year were AES70’s connection management adaptations, that allow the configuration of media networking routing and connection paths for technologies such as MILAN™ and AES67.

On the Wednesday of the show, the OCA Alliance and the Audio Product Development Association (APDA) cohosted a developer meetup to introduce product creators to the AES70 open control standard and directly connect these creators with solution providers. The event was standing room-only as attendees saw and discussed options and advantages for incorporating a standards-based control and media networking connection management technology into their products. “The meetup was a truly wonderful event and it was a pleasure to partner with the APDA to connect solution seekers with providers,”notes Wetzell. “AES70 has always been about providing solutions—those that can speed time to market, reduce engineering overhead, and create a whole that Is greater than the sum of its parts—and ISE 2025 was a perfect venue. There’s a definite momentum here, and we can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store!”

The OCA Alliance welcomes new member JOYNED

The OCA Alliance, the trade association dedicated to the promotion, support, and development of the AES70 control standard, is pleased to announce the recent membership of Austrian networking specialists, JOYNED.

Formed by pro audio industry veterans, JOYNED aims to enable companies to incorporate media networking into their products by providing tools and resources that leverage open public standards. At ISE 2023, JOYNED showcased their development board that combines MILAN™ and AES70.

“JOYNED was founded to facilitate and promote network technologies for the professional Pro AV industry,” says Richi Rozas, CMO and Co-Founder of JOYNED. “Professional consortia like the OCA Alliance provide the right environments to collaborate, influence and develop the future of these technologies.

Open standards are the basis for reliable, future-proof ecosystems,” he continues. “They generate certainty for manufacturers, who will benefit from know-how that goes beyond the expertise of their particular company. Now, the real challenge is to fill the gap between the standard’s specifications and the actual implementation of the technology into a commercial product. This is where we want to help and add value to the manufacturers, enabling them to simplify this complex process.

The whole concept of a network ecosystem implies the convergence of different media and protocols for both transport and control of AV data. Manufacturers can now get a simplified way to implement AVB/MILAN™ and AES70/OCA with our software. The vision of JOYNED is to actively work and promote this convergence process so end-users and manufacturers can take full benefit from the advantages of the network.”

“Open public standards are the industry’s best resource for tackling the complex media networking world. The OCA Alliance is thrilled to have JOYNED as a member” says Ethan Wetzell, Marketing Chair for The OCA Alliance. “Their work to bring additional options for developers to incorporate AES70 into their products will allow even more companies to add these standards-based solutions into their products. Taking control: AES70 set for further broadcast success

With new features that are supportive of decentralised and remote production, the AES70 network control standard seems poised for a new level of recognition in broadcast with its latest update, writes David Davies.

It would be fair to say that, in the modern era of networking, it has tended to be transportation technologies that have dominated the industry discussion. For instance, during the 2010s, there was considerable coverage of the multiple audio-over-IP technologies that promised to give customers a more flexible future in terms of transportation and connectivity. Indeed, the options were ultimately so extensive that the the Audio Engineering Society (AES) introduced a standard, AES67, that provided a significant level of interoperability between existing IP audio technologies.

There is no doubt that AES67 has been a sizeable hit. Its incorporation into the SMPTE ST 2110 IP media standards suite and adoption by manufacturers across the board are proof of that. But even when AES67 was first published in 2013, there was a general recognition that another important piece of the puzzle – network control and monitoring – would also have to be addressed with a widely-accepted standard.

The AES’ response to this was the AES70 standard, which was based on the Open Control Architecture (OCA) developed by the OCA Alliance from 2011 onwards. Eventually published as AES70 in January 2016, the standard provides a specification for device control, monitoring and connection management. Like AES67, AES70 is intended to work with a wide variety of IP-based technologies, but does not have a transportation element.

Possibly because of the attention given to the transition from legacy transportation technologies to IP, it’s not always been easy to ascertain the evolution of network control in recent years. But as Ethan Wetzell, marketing committee chair at the OCA Alliance and platform strategist at Bosch Communications, indicates, AES70 has been gradually gaining momentum through its original version and two subsequent updates, AES70-2018 and now AES70-2022.

“Commercially, AES70 has established a respectable market presence and adoption uptake with dozens of products available from multiple manufacturers,” says Wetzell. “However, it is still early days and adoption of control standards is a process that can realistically take time. It is off to a great start, but it is just the beginning.”

Enhancing and extending

Describing the previous version, AES70-2018, as a “mature standard” that has provided the basis of commercial products, Wetzell says that the 2022 update is “focused on extending and adding functionality, improving ease of use for adopters, and evolving the standard in ways that build upon the existing design’s established and stable state.”

Accordingly, the improvements are in large part geared towards improving ease of deployment across different system types. Jeff Berryman, technical committee chair of the OCA Alliance and senior scientist at Bosch Communications, explains they include “new and improved media stream connection management features and standards, [such as] methods for managing media connections in MILAN and ST 2110 systems. The second change I would highlight is a set of features for controllers to manage, upload and download large data blocks, eg. media files (including recording and playback features), log files, device-specific files, and so on. Finally, we have added powerful support for saved parameter settings (aka ‘presets’) and pre-defined command sequences (aka ‘scripts’). This provides substantial system functionality for complex systems and devices.”

To date, the flexibility of AES70 has perhaps been best illustrated by its use as both a primary control technology and a parallel complement to existing control solutions. Looking ahead, it seems the OCA Alliance regards the technology as an enabler of more versatile broadcast infrastructures in which the cloud and remote production play an ever-greater role.

“For both commercial and technical reasons, the future of broadcast audio production is in IP-based facilities with integrated workflows that may include cloud-based processing,” says Berryman. “These facilities will often be decentralised and include contribution from remote locations that are not professionally managed, such as home offices. The successful operation of such facilities will depend critically on the ability of broadcast directors and engineers to control and monitor the production equipment – including both physical and cloud-based virtual devices – remotely. AES70 is currently the only available professional protocol that is sufficiently feature-rich, reliable, and multivendor-friendly to support this.”

Easier to adopt

AES70 is already supported by a broad spectrum of leading manufacturers, including Focusrite, RTS, Bosch, DYNACORD and d&b audiotechnik (a full list of products can be found at the OCA Alliance website). Noting the technology’s recent inclusion in the prestigious RH Consulting Networked Audio Products report, Wetzell says that “awareness of AES70 is gradually spreading through the industry”. Nonetheless, the OCA Alliance is now advancing plans designed to make AES70 more appealing to a wider cross-section of companies.

Invited to consider the roadmap for AES70 in the wake of its 2022 update, Berryman responds: “In the near-term, the priority will be to make AES70 easier for manufacturers to adopt. This initiative will have three components: firstly, more and better documentation and training aids of all kinds; secondly, more and better tools for developing AES70 devices; and finally, more and better tools for developing AES70 controllers.”

The OCA team is also observing the ongoing trajectory of Audinate’s Dante media networking technology and the Networked Media Open Specifications for networked media developed by the Advanced Media Workflow Association – and, specifically, how AES70 might intersect with these developments in future.

“In the medium-term, we are closely watching the emerging requirements for the industry where AES70 is poised to offer a solution,” says Berryman. “These include [provision of a] connection management standard for Dante streaming audio, interoperation with the AMWA NMOS family of control specifications, spatial and object-based audio control and monitoring, and others. There is a lot of exciting work to do – watch this space!”

DeusO Announces AES70 Explorer Software Application

DeusO GmbH has released a software named AES70 Explorer to support hardware engineers developing or integrating AES70 into Pro Audio devices.

AES70 Explorer is designed to connect, expose and control parameters in OCA objects. The software provides a UI builder for fast setup of engineering interfaces and can simultaneously test multiple devices using an array of Pro Audio control widgets.

AES70 is an open control and monitoring standard for professional audio and video network devices, promoted by the OCA Alliance industry consortium. From a single device and controller, to networks with almost any number of devices and multiple controllers, AES70 provides for powerful, high speed, low cost, robust system control and monitoring of devices from different manufacturers. The standard was recently updated with a raft of enhancements and new features that improve accessibility and usability.

When implementing or integrating a control protocol, having an engineering user interface is a crucial step in the development process. As a leading implementer and developer of AES70 solutions, DeusO recognized this and decided the best contribution to support AES70 adoption was to create a free software tool which provides completely customizable engineering interfaces for hardware engineers, testers and product owners.

DeusO AES70 Explorer image1

AES70 Explorer discovers devices using mDNS, as well as via manual connections to a device’s IP address. Once connected, the left navigation lists devices, and presents a tree of device objects. Each device object represents an OCA class type, and a control widget is automatically assigned to each object based on this class type.

Adding a widget to the engineering user interfaces is as simple as clicking on the icon next to the specific object. It is possible to view the individual object parameters in the control panel as well as control these directly with the assigned control widget.

DeusO AES70 Explorer image2 The UI Builder offers widget layout formatting for organizing the engineering interface, as well as local storage for saving multiple interfaces which can be recalled as needed. The storage feature is designed to help manage very complex device UIs, by simplifying layouts, and organizing specific testing or monitoring interfaces into collections of control widgets.
DeusO AES70 Explorer image3

“AES70 Explorer makes the hardware integration process for AES70 demonstrably faster. Internally we use AES70 Explorer to develop and test our own AES70 device integrations, easily finding and fixing issues right away. We think other teams can benefit from this tool for speeding up development, not only for hardware engineers but also for the front-end designers and control interface software engineers,” says Arne Gödeke, co-founder of DeusO.

AES70 Explorer is built on pre-existing software libraries which are available under open source licenses. The free download is available for both Windows 10 or higher and macOS Catalina or higher.

Since 2015, DeusO GmbH specialized as developers of Control Widgets, Web-based User Interfaces and AES70 Control Protocol libraries for professional audio devices and cross-platform applications. For additional information on how AES70 Explorer might benefit adoption of AES70, contact Matt Hardy.

The OCA Alliance looks back on 2021

The OCA Alliance looks back on 2021- New Members, New Resources, and New Technologies

As we look forward to 2022, the OCA Alliance looks back on the year that was and reflects on the progress toward open public standards that the industry took in 2021. Though the past year was still far from normal in many ways, the progress in expanding the Open Control Architecture Ecosystem continued in earnest with the OCA Alliance adding new members, participating in a number of educational events, and developing new technologies.

In 2021, two more high-profile companies – L-Acoustics and Hypex – reinforced the ranks of the OCA Alliance trade association. “We were extremely pleased and honoured to welcome L-Acoustics and Hypex to the fold,” said Ethan Wetzell, Marketing Chairperson for the OCA Alliance. “Both companies exemplify technical excellence in our industry and have been great supporters of open public media networking standards. We look forward to working with them to continue to expand the reach and value that AES70 brings to the Industry and Its users.”

Though in-person events were still scarce, OCA Alliance members participated in several online sessions throughout the year. Jeff Berryman, Matt Hardy, and Ethan Wetzell presented different aspects and elements of AES70 to the public via webinars and AES events. With topics ranging from technical overviews to a hands-on demonstration of an in-development controller technology, the OCA Alliance and its members helped the public to explore the expanding technologies and resources that make up the growing ecosystem. For those unable to attend these events, videos of some of these sessions as well as new educational content and resources on the Alliance’s website (www.ocaalliance.com), with new content being added regularly.

Throughout the year, the flow of technical developments for AES70 and the OCA Ecosystem also continued apace. Work on the next update of the AES70 standard, to be released in the first quarter of 2022, expanded the standard in a multitude of ways. Adding several enhancements to AES70, the next revision delivers several new features. A significant set of future work includes adaptations that will extend AES70’s connection management abilities directly to other media networking technologies such as AES67 and Milan. Alongside this standards work, members such as Resolute Audio and DeusO provided new tools and resources for developers looking for hardware and software offerings for quick Integration of AES70 Into products.

“2021 was certainly a year filled with ups and downs for the industry,” notes Wetzell. “We sincerely want to thank all of our members, the AES, those who attended our events, and everybody working hard to keep the industry moving forward.”

The OCA Alliance demonstrates lowest overhead control solution

Implementation made easy

In a landmark demonstration, OCA Alliance member, DeusO GmbH, has created a control implementation that requires minimal processing and can be implemented in as little as a 1kB solution. This is a highly significant development as it puts AES70 control solutions within the reach of any who wish to implement it.

AES70 is a device control standard that offers a flexible, cost-effective approach to system control. It offers interoperable, standards-based control, free from any particular control system or user interface and works alongside any audio and video networking control protocol.

Scale systems up or down

“One of the fundamental design goals of AES70 and OCA (Open Control Architecture) is to allow scalability, both upwards and downwards. The initial implementations and systems using the standard were larger and more complex, so some perceive the standard as only being able to scale upwards, and thus better suiting applications where more heavyweight hardware with multitudes of processing resources are in place,” says Ethan Wetzell, Marketing Committee Chair for the OCA Alliance. “However, it delights me to to say that our friends at DeusO have put an end to that with a real-world demonstration of an implementation within a static device – in this instance, the Arduino UNO microcontroller board, as it is the smallest development device available with built-in Ethernet capacity – requiring just 1 kB of RAM on the microcontroller system.”

With this (very) slow microcontroller, limited RAM and 100Mbit ethernet, DeusO demonstrated the performance of their lightweight AES70 implementation via a ‘round trip’ web browser user interface connected with the AES70.js (a full controller implementation). The network packets for all control data make a round trip to inform the UI of parameter changes. The UI elements had both read and write widgets for each object in the device. Additionally, a read-only meter provided a general responsiveness example. There were no perceivable latency or performance problems with controlling the smallest AES70 device ever created.

“This new implementation of AES70 proves that any hardware can adopt and benefit from AES70 as its control solution with minimal impact on the rest of the device,” says Matt Hardy, Business Development Partner at DeusO GmbH. “The lightweight nature of AES70 allows manufacturers to use their own proprietary control protocol and implement AES70 over the top of it to allow for a transition to a fully AES70 control solution at any time.”

The future is now

Certain manufacturers adopt this approach – Focusrite being a case in point – whose products run a combination of AES70 and their own control solution. The advantage for manufacturers is that they don’t have to wait for next-generation products in order to implement AES70. Therefore, they can start their transition with their current offering and benefit from the flexibility and interoperability offered by an industry-wide protocol without losing the unique benefits of their own solution.
