An Introductory Tutorial to AES70

From: OCA Alliance

AES70, also known as OCA, is an architecture for system control and connection management of media networks and devices. AES70 is capable of working effectively with all kinds of devices from multiple manufacturers to provide fully interoperable multivendor networks.

This presentation, originally given at AES in 2019, will provide an overview of the AES70 standard. Aimed at developers, users, and technical decision makers, members of the OCA Alliance will cover topics such as the object model, developer resources, and the current and future objectives of the standard.

How To Add AES70 Control to Your Products

From: OCA Alliance

AES70, also known as OCA, is an architecture for system control and connection management of media networks and devices. AES70 is capable of working effectively with all kinds of devices from multiple manufacturers to provide fully interoperable multi-vendor networks.

This presentation, originally given at AES in 2019, will provide a deep-dive on the architecture and implementation of the standard, demonstrating how to implement AES70 inside of a device and how AES70 controllers work. Aimed at developers, members of the OCA Alliance will cover topics such as the object model, class tree, protocol and implementation options, and practical advice for AES70 implementation.

AES70 At A Glance

From: OCA Alliance

AES70 is a standard that supports Open Control Architecture in a highly flexible, scaleable, and robust manner. Through it’s object-oriented design, the standard allows the implementation of a standards-based control mechanism for devices and controllers in an open manner that can be used along side any (or no) audio transport to create a complete media networking device.

This presentation, given at the 2018 AES Exhibition in New York provides an overview and introduction to the AES70 standard and serves as a foundation for the other information and whitepapers that are available from The OCA Alliance.

Audio & Control Over IP with Stagetec & Delec Routers

From: OCA Alliance

There has been several attempts in the past by a variety of audio manufacturers to create an audio over IP standard. To date, none of these ‘standards’ have seen widespread adoption within the broadcast industry.

The vision within the Mediagroup has always been that any standard which we implement within our NEXUS audio routers and DELEC Intercom routers, need to fulfill the same stringent criteria we impose upon our own protocols – designed for use within Broadcast and other real time live production environments.

About Open Control Architecture

From: OCA Alliance

Designing, deploying and managing professional media networks, such as for concert venues, touring shows, broadcast intercom, etc., can be particularly challenging because of the need to bring together a variety of AV equipment into a unified whole. While much progress has been made over recent years on standardizing signal level communications, there is no industry-standard method for managing the interconnected equipment to efficiently produce the desired results.

These challenges are made even more difficult by the frequent requirements to quickly adapt network configurations for the ad hoc accommodation of other equipment, such as concert tours, guest artists, special events, etc. For AV network managers and users, the optimal configuration needed to achieve artistic and fidelity objectives can be a constantly moving and elusive goal.

Connection Management with AES70

It is now feasible to build IP-network-based professional media systems and studios. Such networks offer great flexibility, but pose an operational challenge: How do we control and manage the enhanced routing capability, especially in multivendor systems?

Today’s media networks need standardized connection management services to help manage devices and their media interfaces and connections. .

Today, there are various media transport protocols available. Some of them include connection management schemes, some don’t. The schemes may incorporate standard elements, but none is fully standardized. They do not interoperate.

The need for a standard connection management solution remains unmet.

OCA MicroDemo

The OCA MicroDemo is a demonstration product developed by OCA Alliance members Focusrite, Attero Tech, and Bosch. Its primary purpose is to prove that OCA can run well in lightweight hardware environments.

OCA is standardized by the Audio Engineering Society as AES70. The MicroDemo meets minimum requirements for AES70 compliance, and provides a small set of OCA-controlled application functions as well.

The finished schematic diagrams, board layouts, and custom software for the MicroDemo will be downloadable from the OCA Alliance website at no charge, and on commercially appropriate licensing terms.

The Vision

OCA is an architecture for connection management and control of media devices over digital networks.  It defines a common remote control and discovery language that allows devices from different manufacturers to exchange and respond to device control and audio stream connection information to create interoperability between these devices. OCA is a license-free core technology for network media systems.

Standards & Specifications

AES70 Framework
Also known as OCF, this specification describes the overall architecture of AES70 and describes its mechanisms. OCF is published as this AES document (click button to go to the AES download page):

AES70 Class Structure
Also known as OCC, this specification describes the object-oriented class structure that defines the functional repertoire (connection management, control, and monitoring) of AES70.  OCC is published as this AES document (click button to go to the AES download page):

Also download Annex A in either of two forms (see below for explanation):

AES70 Protocols
Also known as OCP.1, OCP.2, etcetera, these specifications describe protocols that implement OCA control over various types of networks. In AES70-2015, only one protocol — OCP.1 — is defined. It is for TCP/IP networks. Future updates to the standard will define additional protocols. OCP.1 is published as this AES document (click to go to the AES download page):

Also download Annex B in either of two forms (see below for explanation):

Annex UML format
The two annexes listed above are Universal Modeling Language (UML) specifications.  AES70-2 Annex A is particularly important, as it contains the entire specification of the AES70 Class Structure. The UML files are in two forms:
  • The *.eap files are master files from a UML tool named Enterprise Architect from Sparx Systems. The usual version of the tool costs US$240, but Sparx Systems offers a free viewer, download link here.  There is also a 30-day free trial version of the full package — see the download page here.
  • The *.xmi files are master files in XMI 2.1, a standard format for representation of UML information. XMI stands for “XML Metadata Interchange”.  XMI files can be opened by most UML editors, including free ones. See this Wikipedia article for more information.

The AES70 Object Model
This guide has been created by Jeff Berryman, the AES Standards Vice-Chair, as a learning resource for developers or manufacturers interested in implementing AES70 or wishing to understand it to an advanced level.
